A hot oil treatment is a type of deep-conditioning treatment that benefits the hair by hydrating it and the scalp and limiting breakage. Natural hair is prone to dryness, and a hot oil treatment is a great way to moisturize the hair. This is because heat opens the cuticle of the hair and allows moisture to deeply penetrate the hair shaft.
It also prevents split-ends, dandruff and makes the hair more manageable.
There are several ways to do a hot oil treatment. This is the simplest method, suitable for first-timers:
Step 1: Shampoo the hair
It’s better to wash the hair first (even though you’ll wash it again after the treatment) to ensure there isn’t any build-up or excessive dirt on the hair.
Step 2: Heat the oil
Boil water in a pot, then place the bottle of oil (you can alternatively pour your oil into a glass container) and place it in the boiling water until it’s lukewarm.
Note: Don’t let it get too hot, as it may burn your hair and scalp. Also, don’t heat the oil in the microwave as this will break down the nutrients.
To test the temperature, add a drop of the heated oil onto your wrist.
Step 3: Application
Apply the Earthy Healthy Hair Oil to hair and massage the scalp to work it in.
The amount of oil you use depends on the length and thickness of the hair – make sure it is enough to cover the scalp, length of hair and the tips. Please don’t forget the tips – they are the most fragile part of the hair shaft.
The Earthy Healthy Hair Oil (R170.00) contains 16 super oils including:
Organic Argan oil: soothes dryness, itching and combats split ends, also known for making hair softer
Arnica oil: Helps strengthen hair and has anti-inflamatory properties
Organic Grapeseed oil: contains antioxidants, promotes hair growth
Jojoba oil: which has a molecular structure similar to sebum (the oil naturally produced by the scalp), can aid scalp health and has anti-bacterial properties. Jojoba oil also helps with dandruff and an itchy scalp.
Vitamin E Oil: shown to improve hair growth and helps to heal heat damaged hair.
Step 4: Cover up
Cover your hair with a plastic or shower cap, then cover with your usual doek or scarf. You can take it a step further a d wear a cotton beanie as well or wrap a towel around your head. The aim is to create and trap heat o your hair - this allows your cuticles to open up to absorb all the nutrients from the different oils. You can then leave it covered in the oil for 30 minutes (anything beyond that has no added benefits, your hair stops absorbing after 30 minutes)
Note: If you have a hooded dryer or deep conditioning heat cap you can use it to ensure the heat penetrates quicker.
Step 5: Rinse
Rinse everything off with cool water, then proceed with the Earthy Healthy Hair Butter (R150.00) and prep your hair for the following day.
